: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi participated on Tuesday evening in a
mini-summit grouping member states of the African Union Bureau of Heads of
State and Government via video conference, to discuss the outcomes of the
technical and legal meetings held recently on the Renaissance Dam, under the
auspices of the African Union ...
The mini-summit was
presided-over by current Chairperson of the African Union, President of the
Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa. It was also attended
by members of the Bureau, including President of Kenya, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta;
President of Mali, His Excellency Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta; President of the
Democratic Republic of the Congo, His Excellency President Felix Tshisekedi; in
addition to Prime Minister of Sudan, Mr. Abdalla Hamdok and Prime Minister of
Ethiopia, Mr. Abiy Ahmed.
President El Sisi once
again expressed appreciation for President Ramaphosa’s efforts with regard to
the Renaissance Dam dossier.
President El Sisi
underscored Egypt’s persistent and genuine desire to achieve progress on the
controversial issues, which are fundamental for any fair and balanced agreement
on the Renaissance Dam. The President emphasized that this requires a clear
political will in order to reach agreement on these outstanding issues, so as
to enhance opportunities and efforts toward the desired agreement and support
confidence-building and cooperation to achieve the common interests of the
three countries.
At the end of the
mini-summit, it was agreed to continue negotiations and focus for the time
being on giving priority to crystalizing a binding legal agreement on the rules
of filling and operating of the Renaissance Dam. This shall be followed by
working toward a comprehensive agreement for all aspects of joint cooperation
between the three countries with regard to the use of the Nile Water.
