Dr. Amr Talaat |
The meeting was organized by the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce
(GACIC), and was attended by the German Ambassador to Egypt Cyrill Nunn and
representative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and
GACIC CEO Emad Ghaly.
In an open discussion with the members of the business mission from Egyptian and German companies, the ICT Minister presented the strategy of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) for building the digital Egypt, based on three pillars: developing digital skills, fostering digital innovation and achieving digital transformation.
Talaat underlined MCIT keenness to train human calibers in digital technologies, promote freelance work among young people and qualify them to compete in global markets. This is achieved through investing in human capital, targeting training 100,000 people by the end of this year. MCIT also launched several initiatives for promoting technological innovation and entrepreneurship, added Talaat.
In 2019, a digital transformation pilot project was implemented in Port Said City, providing 150 digital government services, said the ICT Minister, adding that work is underway to launch a number of digital government services for citizens, nationwide, through different outlets, to ensure access of all segments of society to these services, regardless of their use of technology. He also referred to the State’s investment in the ICT infrastructure, which helped handle the huge internet traffic surge amid the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
Moreover, Talaat said that MCIT strategy focuses on specializing in specific areas including data science and Artificial Intelligence (AI), adding that Egypt has the potential to become a regional hub for the data center industry, with a number of submarine cables passing through its territories. He referred to the efforts exerted to create an enabling legislative environment for the growth of such industry, including drafting the personal data protection law.
The ICT Minister also underscored that MCIT seeks to create an enabling environment for attracting multinationals to establish data centers, as well as for having Centers Of Excellence (CoE) to help export Egyptian digital services to global markets.
Germany is a leader in ICT and a strategic market in this industry, stated the ICT Minister, adding that he looks forward to more cooperation between the two countries in this front, taking into account the large number of professionally trained young Egyptians in technology areas. Talaat highlighted the significance of cooperation to train young people to acquire the German language skills, so they can work in ICT in the German markets.
Furthermore, Talaat stated that the total value of IT services exports in the fiscal year 2018/2019 amounted to 3.6 billion USD, with Egypt becoming one of the top 15 global sites for providing cross-border IT services. In addition, the number of 1,613 new ICT companies were established, achieving an increase of 16.5% compared to the previous fiscal year.
For his part, the German Ambassador to Egypt stated that the meeting helps open a new chapter of Egyptian-German cooperation in ICT. He welcomed the joint work and cooperation with MCIT in improving the German language skills among young Egyptian ICT specialists.
GACIC CEO Emad Ghaly highlighted that IT is one of the fastest growing industries in Egypt, as a result of the attractive Egyptian resources, the large number of young talents and the increased reliance on IT in small industries, thus making Egypt one of the region’s most attractive markets.
Ghaly added that many successful Egyptian companies and startups operate in the German and the European markets, as Egypt’s technology startup ecosystem facilitates exporting abroad. On the other hand, many German and European companies established CoEs in Egypt, like Siemens’ Mentor.
During the meeting, a number of German companies expressed interest in operating in the Egyptian market and collaborating with MCIT and GACIC to boost their investment in Egypt in different areas, the most prominent of which are digital transformation technologies, Augmented Reality (AR) and fintech.
